Air Conditioning Operator (ACO)
Nashville, TN (TVHS VA Medical Center – onsite)
The Air Conditioning Operator supports continuous environmental control across a large VA medical campus, including clinical labs, operating rooms, MRI suites, and data rooms. This role requires hands-on operation of large-scale HVAC and chilled water systems in a hospital environment.
Independent operation requires completion of 45 days of onsite VA training.
Position Responsibilities
What You’ll Do
- Operate and monitor a multi-zone air conditioning plant supporting the entire medical center
- Start, stop, and adjust centrifugal and reciprocating chillers (up to ~3,000 tons)
- Monitor chilled water, condenser water, pumps, motors, cooling towers, and air handlers
- Perform hourly inspections and log operational data (pressures, temperatures, volt/amp readings)
- Adjust room and air handler temperatures; respond to system alarms
- Support emergent facility issues including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and building systems
- Maintain cleanliness of fan rooms and mechanical spaces
- Perform weekly and monthly preventative maintenance (PMs)
- Maintain A/C Operations logbooks and conduct shift hand-off briefings
- Provide emergency coverage shifts as required
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Contract-Required)
•Minimum 12 months of commercial HVAC and building operations experience
•EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification (required)
•Ability to complete 45 days of onsite VA training prior to independent operation
•Experience operating large-scale HVAC systems in complex facilities
