Clinical Perfusionist (ICSP Staff Augmentation – VA)

To support cardiothoracic surgical and critical care services for U.S. Veterans, this role provides onsite clinical perfusion services at a Level-of-Care VA Medical Center. This is a staff augmentation position embedded with VA surgical teams, supporting open-heart procedures, ECMO, and emergency coverage.
Position Responsibilities
What You’ll Do
•Provide onsite perfusion services in support of cardiothoracic surgical cases, including open-heart and valve replacement procedures
•Prepare, operate, and maintain heart-lung machines and related perfusion equipment
•Support extracorporeal circulation, ECMO, intra-aortic balloon pump, and ventricular assist device operations
•Review patient records in the VA Electronic Health Record (EHR) prior to procedures
•Maintain sterile environments and manage blood volume to prevent shock or air embolism
•Document all perfusion activities and transfusions in accordance with VA and Joint Commission standards
•Participate in quality assurance, peer review, and ongoing provider performance evaluations (OPPE)
•Provide on-call coverage (24/7 rotation) and respond within 30 minutes for emergent cases
•Coordinate with surgical, anesthesia, and ICU teams during procedures and post-operative care
•Complete required VA training, infection control compliance, and mandatory reporting
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Contract-Required)
•Board Certified Clinical Perfusionist (American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion – ABCP)
•Graduate of an accredited School of Perfusion Technology
•Minimum 10 years of experience as a practicing Perfusionist
•Minimum 1,000 documented clinical perfusion cases
•Demonstrated experience in:
oOpen heart surgery
oAutotransfusion
oHeart-lung machine operations
oECMO
oLeft/right heart bypass
oIntra-aortic balloon pump
oCentrifugal ventricular assist devices
•Current, full, unrestricted license (any U.S. state or territory)
•BLS certification (ACLS as required by VA training standards)
•Ability to pass VA credentialing, privileging, background investigation, and health screenings
•Ability to work onsite and participate in required on-call coverage
