Linguist (Russian) and Cultural Advisor – Camp Xiphos, Jordan TS-SCI
About the Role
We are seeking a Russian Linguist and Cultural Advisor (CULAD) with strong expertise in Russian geopolitical influence in the Middle East. Candidates should possess excellent knowledge of current Russian events and a deep cultural understanding. This role supports a diverse team on a large-scale program.
Clearance Required: Current, active DoD Top Secret (TS) with SCI eligibility
Assignment: Unaccompanied, one-year assignment (extendable)
Shift Work: May be required
Camp Xiphos, Jordan (Secure U.S. Military Compound)
Key Responsibilities
- Provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME) on Russian religious and ethnic groups, including influential moderate voices.
- Support key leader engagement events conducted in Qatar with relevant partners.
- Gather information on trends, behaviors, events, and global developments to produce media synopsis reports and geopolitical assessments.
- Advise DoD and military leadership on social media influence operations, including policy, doctrine, decisions, trends, and studies.
- Produce predictive recommendations and identify strategic communications opportunities.
- Translate, interpret, and analyze oral and written materials, including classified reports, data, briefings, and conversations.
- Deliver accurate written and oral translations that preserve the meaning and intent of the original content.
- Provide assessments, transcription, translation, interpretation, cultural advisement, and media analysis to support actionable intelligence products.
- Apply congruity judgment by reading and comprehending source language materials, writing clearly, and selecting equivalent expressions that convey intended meaning.
- Demonstrate excellent command of Russian and English in speaking, reading, and writing.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop communications and support plans.
- Ensure cultural context, specialized terminology, and subject matter accuracy in translations and interpretations.
- Conduct research in native Russian and prepare command-level information papers.
- Monitor industry and technology trends across traditional, digital, social, and mobile media.
- Apply directed or designed research methods aligned with client criteria.
- Provide cultural expertise in both Russian and English, orally and in writing.
- Analyze data for coded patterns and interpret findings across a broad range of subjects.
- Be prepared to work extended work weeks based on mission requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Education and Experience (one of the following):
Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Political Science, International Studies, Anthropology, Communications, or a related field from an accredited institution, plus 9 years of Cultural Advisor/Linguist experience, or
Master’s degree plus 7 years of related experience
Substitution: An additional 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of the degree requirement - SME in Russian culture, religious and ethnic groups, influential moderate voices, and ethnic landscape supporting efforts to counter extremist activities
- Minimum 5 years prior experience supporting U.S. Armed Forces or U.S. Government agencies
- Language scores: minimum 4/4/4 in English and 5/5/5 in Russian (or higher)
- Ability to deliver high-quality presentations and work effectively with small and large groups
- Demonstrated ability to:
Provide objective, unbiased, and logical cultural advisement
Follow orderly, sequential, systematic procedures and guidelines
Provide interpretation, translation, transliteration, transcription, and DOCEX (document exploitation) services
Provide written and verbal translation of various media from target language to source language while maintaining congruity judgment
Demonstrate strong listening skills and attention to detail
Present comfortably to small and large groups
Maintain an in-depth understanding of cultural differences, nuances, customs, symbolism, mannerisms, and traditions of ethnic groups throughout Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan) - Strong oral, written, and electronic communication skills in English
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- U.S. citizenship required
- Valid U.S. passport that does not expire within 1 year
- Fully eligible for a Jordanian visa
- Current, active DoD TS security clearance with SCI eligibility
Preferred Qualifications
- Native Russian or Tajik heritage
- Expert understanding of Tajik tribal, religious, and ethnic landscape
- Experience working with Information Operations or MISO units
- Broad experience as a DoD media monitor or researcher
