CONTINGENT UPON CONTRACT AWARD
We are seeking Phlebotomists to support the VA Maine Healthcare System – Togus with onsite laboratory and specimen collection services. This requirement supports 4 full-time equivalent (FTE) Medical Technicians (Phlebotomists) providing inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy coverage in a VA clinical environment.
The anticipated contract structure is one base year plus four option years, with current solicitation language showing an estimated base performance period beginning 08/15/2026.
Position Responsibilities
•Perform patient phlebotomy for:
oInpatient ward rounds
oInpatient and outpatient collections
oEmergency Department draws
oSTAT / ASAP draws
oTimed draws
•Perform specimen processing and send-out preparation
•Work across multiple areas of the lab based on service need
•Positively identify patients before specimen collection and specimens before testing or aliquoting
•Document, evaluate, and help resolve collection, processing, testing, and reporting issues
•Safeguard electronic and paper patient information
•Provide patient-centered service and maintain professional interactions with patients, staff, and stakeholders
•Support quality and safety expectations in accordance with VA, CLSI, CAP, and related laboratory standards
Schedule
This requirement is currently structured as:
•2 FTE Day Shift: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM
•2 FTE Evening Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
Additional schedule notes:
•Rotating weekends and holidays
•Weekend shifts may be:
o6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
o1:30 PM – 9:00 PM
•Weekends are expected approximately 1–2 times per month, but may be more based on lab need
•Shifts may vary based on laboratory requirements
•On-call and standby are not required
•Overtime, weekends, and holiday coverage may be required as needed
Required Qualifications
•Minimum 3 years of recent phlebotomy experience
•Current AHA BLS
•Current AHA ACLS
•Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently
•Ability to obtain and maintain VA credentialing / onboarding approval
•Ability to meet occupational health and background screening requirements
•Ability to provide or obtain NPI documentation as required for VA processes
Preferred Qualifications
•Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) designation through ASCP or AMT is preferred
•Prior hospital or VA laboratory experience
•Strong experience with inpatient, outpatient, ED, STAT, and timed draws
•Comfortable working rotating shifts in a structured clinical laboratory environment
