Medical Officer of the Day (MOD)
Schedule / Coverage: 6:00 pm–7:00 am Mon–Thu; 6:00 pm Fri–7:00 am Mon (entire weekend); all federal holidays
SRG is seeking the right candidate to support after-hours clinical coverage for Veterans, our Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) will provide onsite urgent care + Community Living Center (CLC) medical coverage, manage admissions/disposition, and ensure timely documentation and safety reporting in VA systems, measured against VAMC policies and required performance standards.
Battle Creek VA Medical Center (5500 Armstrong Road, Battle Creek, MI 49037)
- Provide onsite after-hours physician coverage for CLC and urgent care, remaining on VA grounds during the tour unless formally relieved by another MOD
- Report to urgent care at shift start; receive pager/keys and complete physician-to-physician sign-out
- Examine and disposition Veterans presenting for care (walk-ins, established outpatients, referrals/transfer discussions as applicable)
- Determine when patients need to be seen based on nursing contact; document progress notes and any orders entered (including when delayed)
- Complete H&P (including mental status exam) and medication reconciliation for new admissions within required timeframes
- Complete required documentation for patients solely managed by MOD during a hospital stay, including discharge summary and patient instructions
- Evaluate and document falls/injuries and complete incident/severity documentation as required
- Provide emergency care/treatment for employees and visitors after regular hours (per VAMC expectations)
- Manage high-acuity events (e.g.,deaths) including pronouncement, medical record documentation, next-of-kin notification, and required signing prior to departure when applicable
- Comply with restraints/seclusion requirements including required evaluations, documentation, and renewals/orders
- Use VA formulary; submit non-formulary requests when indicated; use after-hours pharmacy process when outpatient pharmacy is closed
- Coordinate with AOD as needed for administrative support and required communications/logging
- Provide timely consultation to Psychiatrist on Duty (POD) when requested; complete First Clinical Certification and entry-level admission orders in consultation with POD as described
- Current, full, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. State/Territory/Commonwealth/DC (no prior restrictions/suspensions/revocations as described in PWS)
- Board Certified / Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice
- Inpatient and outpatient experience
- BLS (AHA) and ACLS (AHA) — current and maintained
- Ability to speak/read/write English fluently
