Remote Outpatient Medical Coder

Position Responsibilities
•Review complete electronic health record documentation for assigned outpatient encounters
•Assign and validate:
oICD-10-CM diagnosis codes
oCPT codes
oHCPCS Level II codes
oAppropriate modifiers
•Code outpatient encounters including:
oPrimary and specialty care
oAncillary services
oRadiology and laboratory services
oProsthetics
oAmbulatory surgery
oAnesthesia
oPathology
•Apply current Evaluation and Management coding guidelines
•Apply NCCI bundling/edit requirements
•Identify documentation that does not support code assignment
•Identify duplicate encounters or encounters created in error
•Determine when encounters are not billable and document standardized reasons using VA systems
•Perform re-reviews and corrections associated with billing edits, denials, or retrospective reviews
•Enter and validate coding information using the VA national encoder, VistA/CPRS, webACM, and other VA-approved systems
•Provide daily productivity and pending-workload reporting
•Support limited coding audits and validation reviews when requested
Required Qualifications
•Active coding credential through AHIMA or AAPC, including one of the following:
oRHIA
oRHIT
oCCS
oCCS-P
oCCA
oCDIP
oCPC
oCPC-H or recognized successor equivalent
•Completion of an accredited coding, Health Information Management, or Health Information Technology program
•Minimum 6–8 years of outpatient and/or applicable medical coding experience
•Current ICD-10 training and CEUs required to maintain certification
•Formal knowledge of:
oAnatomy and physiology
oMedical terminology
oPathology and disease processes
oPharmacology
oReimbursement methodologies
oICD-10-CM
oCPT
oHCPCS
•Strong understanding of modifiers, sequencing, bundling, NCCI edits, and documentation requirements
•U.S. citizenship required
•Must perform all work from within the United States
•Must reside within 50 miles of a VA Medical Center
•Ability to satisfy VA background, security, PIV, privacy, and system-access requirements
